Are repeal petitions public information?

I was asked to sign a petition to repeal the ordinance.  Can my name and personal information be made public?

Answer

Yes.  Any repeal petitions submitted to the City Secretary's office and the information contained on them become public information under the Texas Public Information Act.  They are subject to open records requests just like any other public document and can be disclosed or published under the First Amendment. Petition circulators are not obligated to inform signers that their personal information can be made public.
