How to be a Trans* ally

The DO's and DON'Ts of being a Trans* Ally

Provided by the Houston Transgender Unity Committee

DO:

  • Get to know us, you might like us
  • Make every effort to use the pronoun that the person identifies with
  • Be respectful of other people and their boundaries
  • Make an attempt to educate yourself
  • Stand up for Trans* Identified people
  • Remember, we are humans...just like you

DON'T:

  • Ask about our genitals
  • Make jokes at our expense
  • Out someone without their permission
  • Remind us that we are Trans* Identified
  • Assume everyone is straight or gay; gender expression has nothing to do with sexual orientation.
