On Sunday, April 10th, Shante Thompson, a transgender woman of color, was murdered in Houston's Midtown neighborhood. Her friend, Willie Sims, was also killed after witnesses report that he tried to protect Shante as they were descended upon by a group of attackers. The details of the attack are nothing short of brutal.
Shante Thompson becomes the 4th transgender Texan to die in 2016 due to violence, or due to suspicious circumstances.
On Friday, April 15th Houstonians gathered together at Houston City Hall to hold a vigil for Shante Thompson and Willie Sims.
Before the vigil, Mayor Sylvester Turner addressed the crowd.
Speakers at the vigil included renowned blogger Monica Roberts, Pastor Freedom Gulley of the Progressive Open Door Christian Center, Reagan White and Phoebe E. VanCleefe, both transgender activists and advocates and Dee Dee Watters who performed a moving spoken word piece.
